There are many beautiful parts of the world and I have discovered one here on Long Island in the Whitsundays. My 14 year old daughter was searching the internet for places to go on holidays and she discovered this gem. There is one resort open here, Palm Bay with a maximum of 60 guests, around 40 when we visited, with villas that overlook the beach.
There are many things to attract you to this place, so what attracts a dietitian?
A walk in fridge has everyone’s delicious produce waiting to be turned into the dish of their choice. The fridge is commercial size, big enough that my daughter was in there at our box down the back and someone didn’t realise she was there and nearly closed and locked the door on her!
A few shelves have goodies left by others. A frolic around in there and you can jazz up your dish with a marinade or other condiments and goodies.
It is a lovely way to meet people and have a chat while cooking or if you prefer cook and dine alone or romantically as a couple. There are plenty of choices of dining tables for all. My mum found what she called, ‘our table’. What ever tickles your fancy!
On holidays we had time to enjoy cooking. Looking out onto the pool and the family cooking together was a delight. My daughter perfected her morning eggs on the barbecue and was proud of her spaghetti bolognese sauce. She tells me it was better than mine! Let’s see if she wants to keep doing it at home when there isn’t someone to do the dishes.
I do enjoy a meal at a restaurant sometimes however we stayed for four days and I much prefer to be choosing my own food, eating when and how much I desire over this period of time. I find continuous buffet breakfasts at resorts leave me feeling sluggish as I always over eat no matter how hard I try. We could also eat breakfast when we wished to, early some mornings and later others, particularly after the morning my daughter and I went on a 7km bush walk.
Cooking ourselves we could prepare plenty of vegetables and fresh fruit, something I find eating out often lacks. We could bring our favourite cereal and yoghurt and everything else too.
As I have some special dietary requirements at the moment it also meant that I knew exactly what was in the food and I didn’t have to ask a million questions to a chef or waitress. Another bonus was it being an economical way of staying at a resort, BYO food.
Long Island for me has been a place I needed to recharge the batteries. It provides my perfect combination:
We snorkeled, bush walked, kayaked and swam. I sat by the pool and on the veranda of my villa, read, admired the view, watched the birds, chatted to the family and snoozed in the hammock. This was interspersed with cooking and eating and did I mention, you don’t have to do the dishes! What else could anyone ask for?
PS I don't have any commercial association with Palm Bay, I simply loved the cook your own style as it makes me feel so much healthier and energetic whilst recharging on holidays
